Property News - Housebuilders urged to evolve

A new publication is set to call on property builders to respond to the growing challenges of the 21st century.

The Design for Manufacture Lessons Learnt publication is due to be launched later this week by housing and planning minister Yvette Cooper, who explained that the document will outline the successes and lessons of the government's Design for Manufacture competition.

Housebuilders were tasked with designing and developing a property which would cost just £60,000 to build in an effort to improve the availability of affordable housing in the UK.

The publication will demonstrate what worked and what failed, in a bid to encourage more construction groups to establish cheap homes for first time buyers.

It is hoped that the publication will be used by housebuilders to respond to the challenges presented by the 21st century, in particular the lack of affordable housing.

Ms Cooper commented: "The success of the Design for Manufacture competition has been to show that you can improve quality and cut costs at the same time. Now, we want far more builders, planners and local authorities to learn from the lessons of the competition."
