Landlords warned to protect against flooding

Landlords and homeowners across the UK are being advised to prepare themselves for storms over the next few weeks.

Landlords and homeowners across the UK are being advised to prepare themselves for storms over the next few weeks.

Weather experts have warned that flooding is likely as winter approaches and landlords in particular should ensure that all their properties are secured and insured against damage.

Homeowners are advised to watch out for freak weather conditions and take precautions and Barclays has revealed that the period between September and November last year witnessed the highest number of weather-related home insurance claims, up 65 per cent on the previous quarter.

An estimated five million people in Britain are at risk from flooding and the Environment Agency now provides regular updates on its website to warn homeowners of approaching storms.

In the event of a flood, homeowners and landlords should be able to switch off gas, water and electricity mains quickly and take steps to prepare for possibly flooding.

A number of areas have already been hit by heavy rain and flooding this year and meteorologists and Met Office experts are forecasting further storms over the coming weeks.
