Buy-to-let is a family affair research for Standard Life has revealed, with 68 per cent of rental investments being made in collaboration with immediate family members.

More than half of all buy-to-let investments in the capital (58 per cent) are joint affairs between married couples and ten per cent are in conjunction with other relatives.

A quarter of landlords said that they had originally become 'accidental' investors after receiving an inheritance or windfall.

Another 32 per cent take a more structured view saying that their property investment was intended to secure their financial future and one in five say it is a business to them.

A fifth of landlords did not enter the market until they were in their 50s, but a third are in their 30s.

Almost 70 per cent said that they use their rental yield as their main source of income or aspire to doing so in the future.
