Property News - DIY as serious as other investments says Biba

Homeowners should treat DIY work as seriously as they do other forms of investment in their property, insurance companies have said

Homeowners should treat DIY work as seriously as they do other forms of investment in their property, insurance companies have said.

The British Insurance Brokers' Association (Biba) added that they should check that any work carried out is covered under the terms of their insurance policy.

The first months of the year are the busiest season for DIY work, with £57 billion expected to be spent by UK homeowners on improvements in the next four months.

"It is important that consumers talk to their broker to guarantee that any changes they have made are covered by their insurance cover," said Peter Staddon of Biba.

"Home improvements can make a huge difference to the cost of our properties and quality of life. We save up all year so that we can afford to pay for this work, and it is vital that these changes are covered by our insurance policies."

The average property owner spent £1,509 on handymen last year, while 1.2 million spent more than £10,000.
