DIY-mad Brits will spend an average of £90,000 on DIY over a lifetime, a new survey from Cornhill Direct has found.

On average, every family will spend approximately £634 per year on materials and £812 on furnishings, adding up to an annual expenditure of £1,400, the research discovered.

And 17 per cent of those surveyed admitted that at some point they had had a DIY disaster and been forced to put in a claim.

Simon Coughlin, spokesman for Cornhill Direct, said: "As an insurer we encourage people to take good care of their homes. The results of the survey suggest that many people are doing exactly that.

"We have seen our fair share of DIY related claims over the years so people should make sure they know what they're are doing and use the right tools for the job."

Those carrying out DIY projects should check to see if their home insurance covers them if things go wrong, added Mr Coughlin.

The average price of a house in England and Wales has risen to almost £200,000 over the last year.
