Property News - Free home information packs offered

Residential agency Hamptons International has announced that it will be offering the new home information packs (Hips) free of charge when the scheme becomes mandatory on June 1st.

Residential agency Hamptons International has announced that it will be offering the new home information packs (Hips) free of charge when the scheme becomes mandatory on June 1st.

Hamptons made the announcement in the wake of reports that some companies may charge up to £1,000 for the Hips, with the Daily Telegraph recently suggesting some homeowners will accept a fixed £200 fine for not having the pack rather than pay extra.

Emma Davies, Hampton's operation director, said in the announcement: "Many potential sellers are concerned about the impact of Hips and it is evident that a number will take the decision to market their properties before the June implementation date.

"However, for others this timeframe will just not be suitable."

Another concern over Hips has been claims that not enough inspectors will be trained in time to enforce the energy performance certificates.

However, British Gas announced yesterday that it will be training 500 of its engineers as inspectors ahead of June 1st as part of the launch of its new green energy arm.
