The Office of Fair Trade (OFT) is encouraging homebuyers to look for estate agents who feature its approved code logo.

Such estate agents usually offer better customer service as they are a member of the Ombudsman for Estate Agents Company (OEAC).

Members of the OEAC have committed to giving clear information about the services they provide and treating their customers justly, should any problems occur.

Colin Brown, the OFT's director of advisory, policy and international, said: "Buying a home is the biggest financial commitment many of us will make and consumers who choose an agent signed up to an OFT approved code can rest assured that they will be treated fairly."

A search facility on the OFT's website can be used for would-be homeowners to find OFT approved real estate agents.

The OFT's statement came as Codes Awareness Month, a campaign in London, West Midlands, Tyneside, Greater Manchester, Scotland and Wales, draws to an end.
