Property News - UK house prices top £100k mark everywhere

Every town in Britain now has an average house price of over £100,000, new research has shown.

The news, which indicates the increasing difficulty for those trying to get on the property ladder, was provided by Halifax, which published figures showing that Lochgelly in Fife, the only place with an average house price under £100,000 in December last year, has now seen the figure rise to £104,738.

Lochgelly had suffered a slump after the local mines closed, but has seen significant regeneration in recent years.

The report also reveals that Scotland as a whole has seen house prices rising at double the UK average, up 22.4 per cent in the last 12 months compared with the overall rise of 11.1 per cent.

In addition, the south of England has opened up a gap on the north, the figures show, with double-digit house price inflation in London, the south-east and the south-west while the north has seen prices increase by a comparatively small 5.6 per cent.
