Property News - Brown committed to affordable housing

Gordon Brown has pledged to improve the availability of affordable housing for first time buyers when he becomes prime minister later this week.

Gordon Brown has pledged to improve the availability of affordable housing for first time buyers when he becomes prime minister later this week.

Mr Brown, who became leader of the Labour Party at the weekend, has said that he will make the problem of a chronic lack of available housing stock a priority and will seek out methods to tackle the housing shortage.

The chancellor is aiming to improve the availability of affordable housing for first time buyers and also suggested that a range of measures will be considered, not simply the building of new properties.

Speaking on the BBC's Politics Show, Mr Brown said: "We've got to look at whether the arrangements that govern the building of housing, both to rent and to buy, are going to get us the results that we need, which is to meet the demand, particularly of young couples wanting to get onto the housing ladder for the first time, frustrated they're not able to do.

"That's why I said the new challenge is affordable housing and it's one that we will address immediately."
