How we'll live in 2027

The homes we live in will change vastly in the next 20 years, according to a new report.

Alliance & Leicester has teamed up with the Centre for Future Studies to make predictions about how we will all live in the year 2027.

The report predicts that environmental concerns, changing demographics and technological advances will take hold and our homes will never be the same again.

It is predicted that homes will become easily extended and updated, with additional rooms being added to accommodate larger families.

This, it is said, will be down to the fact that we all live longer and share the costs of a home by having up to three generations of one family in a single property.

Climate change will also have a big impact, with homes being fitted with solar panels and small wind turbines.

Houses will also have individual waste management systems, be more energy efficient and waste little or no water at all.

In addition, advances in computer technology will allow more of us to work from home, turning our houses into our offices and reducing our carbon footprint by eliminating the commute to work.

"Radical changes to our homes will occur during the next 20 years with changing demographics and environmental concerns paving the way for a new breed of green homes," commented Stephen Leonard director of mortgages at Alliance & Leicester.
