The ideal home for most Britons is detached and set in the countryside.

New research published by Halifax shows that most British buyers want a three bedroom property with plenty of peace and quiet.

The hustle and bustle of city life is not ideal for most and 30 per cent said that they would like to live in a rural area.

Further to this, most (22 per cent) would opt for a new build property if given the choice and environmentally friendly features are also popular.

"Although many of us live in towns or cities, there is no disputing that a house in the country is what the majority of us aspire to," said Phil Jenks from Halifax.

"The preference for new build detached properties shows that people want their home to be personal to them and that space and privacy is also important."

Things such as central heating, double glazing and a fitted kitchen are now considered essential by at least 79 per cent of people.

Desirable but non-essential aspects of a home include a conservatory (66 per cent), loft conversion (55 per cent) and a utility room (55 per cent).
