According to a new report, although many young people trying to buy their first home say they are struggling because they are being priced out by investors, many also claim that if they could afford to let out a home they would.

The Ipsos Mori poll questioned 2,000 Brits, 60 per cent of which agreed that the buy-to-let market was having a negative impact on housing.

But half added that if they had the funds they would happily buy a flat or house and rent it out to others.

Stephen Finlay, head of housing research at Ipsos Mori, said: "This survey shows that many people have strong feelings about buy-to-let says but the picture is mixed.

"Whatever people think about buy-to-let though, there are clearly plenty of people eager to get in on the action if they can."
