One leading mortgage broker is drawing attention to the advantages offered by online property portals and marketplaces.

A spokesman for Charcol said the internet is allowing prospective homeowners to make better informed financial decisions about which mortgage to take out.

"Most people now go to someone who can look across, if not the entire market, then a good proportion of the market to find things out … It has become less hassle - you can do that all in one place," he said.

The spokesman added that being able to look at the market as a whole reduces the need to spend time shopping around for different quotes, so consumers now have less difficulty understanding the range of mortgages on offer.

"The internet has made mortgages a lot easier to deal with. The better informed you are, the chances are you'll make a better decision," he added.

A recent survey by hotproperty.com found that long term confidence in the housing market remains high and house prices are expected to climb by a further 3.9 per cent over the next year.
