Rics faces opposition to Hips stance

The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (Rics) has run into trouble over its stance on Home information packs (Hips).

The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (Rics) has run into trouble over its stance on Home information packs (Hips).

The organisation launched a judicial review against the government over Hips but has since encountered opposition among its members.

A petition has been signed by 150 members which calls for the immediate launch of Hips across the entire housing market in England and Wales.

Once the petition has 200 signatures, the members say that Rics will need to call an EGM in order to discuss the issue.

Rics claims that 910 signatures would be needed before such action is taken but this is clearly a blow to the organisation, which accused the government of failing to consult other industry figures before pushing ahead with the implementation of Hips.

"A large body of Rics members believe that Rics has done exactly what it claimed the government has done in that it hasn't consulted its members or stakeholders and has acted in a heavy handed way," said SSH Chartered Surveyors partner Margaret Grafham, who started the petition.

The petition demands the withdrawal of the judicial review against the government.
