Hips help energy efficiency

Website DownwithCO2 says that the packs will help to raise the profile of energy efficiency issues within the home.

Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs), which form part of Hips, grade properties on their energy efficiency and the website says that they could soon have a major impact on the value of a property.

"In principle, now the energy efficiency of your property is a relevant and important part of the home selling process; that in itself is a really positive thing," said co-founder of the site Sam Turnball.

"Energy efficiency could become a differentiator between two or three similar properties.

"People will look at which will cost the most to run, which has the most efficient boiler and which is best insulated," he added.

Hips are now a mandatory part of the home-selling process for properties with three or more bedrooms.

The government has plans to expand the rollout to include all homes in England and Wales but a date for this expansion has not yet been decided upon.
