Nationwide has published its Consumer Confidence Index for December, revealing some negatives but many positives.

Nationwide has published its Consumer Confidence Index for December, revealing some negatives but many positives.

Overall, the index revealed that confidence slipped by one point, with some Britons concerned about the stability of the economy.

However, it also showed that the majority of people are confident about the future.

The Expectations Index, which looks at the economic, employment and income situation in six months' time, remained constant in December.

Further to this, the Spending Index increased by five points in the month, signalling that consumers are not so concerned about the economy that they are not prepared to make purchases.

Employment prospects look good as well, with only 24 per cent of respondents saying that they believe there will be fewer jobs available six months down the line.

This is down markedly on the 36 per cent who thought the same a year ago.
