Target for rural homes welcomed

A new target for affordable new homes in rural communities has been welcomed by Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE).

A new target for affordable new homes in rural communities has been welcomed by Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE).

The organisation is supporting the government's attempt to increase the supply of affordable housing in rural areas.

The government target is to build 10,300 new affordable homes in communities of less than 3,000 within three years.

Neil Sinden, policy director at CPRE, said that the target is welcome but urged the government not to rest on its laurels.

"This target is an important step in the right direction. But for it to be meaningful, it must be backed by adequate resources and the effective use of the planning system to deliver the homes that are needed in the right places," he commented.

"Ensuring that new affordable homes remain so will be greatly helped by recent moves by the government to enable restrictions on the sale of new shared ownership homes in rural areas," continued Mr Sinden.
