Property News - Alistair Darling makes housing promise

The chancellor of the exchequer has promised that the government will do all it can to support the housing market.

The chancellor of the exchequer has promised that the government will do all it can to support the housing market.

During a visit to China, Alistair Darling told reporters that the government is willing to take "whatever action is necessary" in order to keep housing buoyant.

It comes after the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (Rics) revealed that market sentiment slumped to a 30-year low in March.

Mr Darling highlighted some of the work that was already being done to help the housing market and said that more would follow.

"We will continue to take whatever action is necessary to support the wider financial market and therefore, through that, the housing market," he told reporters.

"In relation to the housing market, you will be aware that we are working with the Bank of England to continue to support stability within the financial markets," added the chancellor.

Halifax recently revealed that annual house price growth was 1.1 per cent in March.
