"No doubt" that gardens add value to property

Homeowners can add to the value of their properties by carrying out work on their gardens.

In fact, Joe Swift, gardening expert and presenter of the BBC's Gardener's World, said that there is "no doubt" that a garden adds to the value of a property.

At a time when the housing market is slowing down, anything that makes a property stand out from the rest is beneficial to a seller.

"Gardens add value - there's no doubt about this, there's been a lot of research into this over the years - and more value than the investment that's gone into the property," said Mr Swift.

"Things like ponds are a bit dodgy; they can put buyers off because they think they'll have to maintain the pond and the fish might die. Try and keep it quite simple, quite classic.

"Have something that looks like it's been well designed rather than plonked in," he added.
