New research shows that house prices in parts of the UK market increased in March.

The Poll of Polls from Chesterton, with figures compiled by the Centre for Economics and Business Research (Cebr), shows that the top-end of the market enjoyed a positive month.

According to the survey, prices in the top 20 per cent of the UK housing market increased by 0.3 per cent in that period.

The London market saw the largest price growth annually, with a typical property increasing in value by 11.3 per cent.

Douglas McWilliams, chief executive of Cebr, said that the figures suggest the housing market is not in as bad a state as some media reports would suggest.

"House prices are probably not doing quite as badly as the headlines from some of the mortgage providers imply," he commented.

Linden Homes South East recently revealed that retirement properties are proving resilient to turbulence in the housing market.
