Buyers hoping to make the most of their new home by renovating it could take advantage of a new scheme that offers homeowners a free consultation.

"Architect in the House" is a fundraising initiative run by Shelter and the Royal Institute for British Architects (Riba).

The scheme is being supported by TV presenter Melissa Porter and offers homeowners a free hour-long consultation by an architect in return for a donation to Shelter.

Ms Porter said: "Many people think architects are only for the rich and famous, but Architect in the House is a fantastic way to show how we can all benefit from their advice."

An architect can, according to Ms Porter who has presented shows such as "Put Your Money Where Your House Is", "create more space [and] add value to your home".

Adam Sampson, chief executive at Shelter, said explained that the scheme, which starts on June 1st, is a good way for homeowners to get advice "while helping thousands in desperate housing need".
