Energy efficiency and sustainability 'keys to eco-home'

Homeowners looking to sell their property must consider energy efficiency and sustainability if they wish to attract eco-conscious buyers, it has been claimed.

According to Isobel McKenzie-Price, editorial director of Ideal Home magazine, simple measures such as insulating doors, roofs and windows can help to cut a house's energy consumption and utility bills.

"If you can, buy pieces for your home which are made locally, from sustainable materials and which will last," she suggested, explaining that longevity is becoming an increasingly significant factor in this environmentally-aware age.

Ms McKenzie-Price also advised new homeowners to turn off lights in empty rooms and switch off appliances rather than leaving them on standby to enjoy noticeable reductions in their energy bills.

Meanwhile, a report in the Daily Telegraph suggests that it could be worth a little extra effort by home sellers to make their properties eco-friendly, as thousands of people are said to be on waiting lists with 'green' developers.

At a time when housing is a buyer's market, anything that can be done to increase demand for a home could be extremely beneficial to a home seller.
