Strong rental demand for 'high-spec' property

Tenant demand for high-spec rental properties is increasing as people come to see their homes, rented or otherwise, as a reflection of themselves, it has been claimed.

According to Architect Your Home, which provides home design from its offices across the UK, people are now looking for much more individual decorating styles than they were in the past.

Nina Longstaff, head of marketing and PR for the firm, said: "It is not just homeowners who demand good design. The 'Ikea generation' has now passed and people are demanding something individual rather than homogeneous design that was adequate for rented properties in the past.

She added that although renters are often unwilling to invest in a property owned by someone else, there is demand from tenants who want to invest in good-quality furniture that they will be able to take with them.

According to Rentright's most recent residential rental price index, the average monthly rent in the UK was £573 in September 2008, down from £1,029 in September 2007.
