Property News - Expert opinion important when considering a loft conversion

Homeowners who are thinking about converting their loft should seek the advice of a professional beforehand.

The National Home Improvement Council (NHIC) has suggested that there are many things that the work could potentially have an impact on, such as reduced space in other rooms.

Andrew Leech, director of the National Home Improvement Council, said that it is additionally worth considering how much structural work will need to be done.

He explained that homeowners would also be wise to consult their local authority even though permission is not needed to carry out a loft extension.

"Anyone thinking about a loft conversion should consult a surveyor or architect to see if it's possible first. You still need to ask the local authority as you need building regulation permission even if you don't need planning permission."

Mr Leech went on to say that it is also a good idea to discuss any plans for building work with neighbours "to keep them sweet".

According to the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, a loft conversion can add up to £10,000 to the value of a home.
