Property News - Recession 'an exception' in terms of sole occupants

There are a surprising number of people living on their own during the financial downturn, it has been suggested.

According to Uber Interiors, the idea of more people living independently during a recession is "an exception" to the norm regarding this sort of living arrangement.

Melissa Porter, co-owner of the company, explained that the current financial climate should really make it difficult for lots of people to live by themselves.

However, she said that the demographic that is interested in living alone has changed considerably over the years.

Ms Porter commented: "If you look at the changing profile, it used to be men and elderly people, but actually there is a big rise in professional women living alone, aged between 25 and 44, for various reasons."

Recent figures from Lloyds TSB Insurance suggested that the number of sole occupants in the UK could increase by two million in the next decade.
