Property News - DIY wins the attention of homeowners

Over a quarter of the nation's homeowners will be indulging in some DIY activities this week in an attempt to improve the value of their home.

A total of 28 per cent of British homeowners will be making some amendments to their property across the popular four-day weekend, according to figures published by M&S Money.

DIY this year may seem more attractive as a result of the recession, which could be focusing homeowners' attention from buying property to improving their own home.

Furthermore, a simple paint job or fixing a niggling issue now could earn homeowners much more than it cost when the market does rebound.

"A quarter of Britain will be staying indoors this Easter weekend to decorate and renovate, according to a new survey," explained a statement from M&S Money.

"The poll also revealed that almost two-thirds (64 per cent) of people are more likely to try to cut costs by attempting DIY rather than employing a tradesman."

Research last month from the National Association of Estate Agents could suggest that homeowners may be DIY-ing in preparation for a sale, as the organisation pointed to a 20 per cent rise in interest for property between January and March.
