All UK property to have smart meters

A major change for the UK property industry has been announced by the government's Department of Energy and Climate Change.

In a statement yesterday, it was revealed that all properties in the UK will have smart meters by 2020.

The real-time technology, which indicates how much gas and electricity a property is using, will be useful for energy bills and will help homes become more environmentally friendly.

Implementing the smart meter will have various benefits, according to politicians.

For example, it will be straight forward for landlords and tenants to discuss meter reading at the start of tenancy agreements.

Energy and climate change secretary Ed Miliband said: "This is another part of our Great British refurb. The meters most of us have in our homes were designed for a different age, before climate change."

He added that there will be no longer be a need for energy bill estimations, which often cause confusion among homeowners and tenants.
