Property News - HBF calls on government to act on mortgages

The government needs "to push through" the measures it has set-up to boost mortgage lending in the UK, according to the Home Builders Foundation (HBF).

Head of communications at the trade association Steve Turner said the group is hopeful about the success of the schemes established to do just that.

It is hoped that the moves made by politicians will start bearing fruit "in the next few months".

An upturn in mortgage lending levels is vital for the health of the whole housing sector, Mr Turner explained.

"The crux of the issue in terms of the housing market is getting banks lending again at sensible rates to people who want to buy homes," he added.

Construction activity is another indication of the health of the property market, and the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors released a survey on this matter earlier this week.

It suggested that the balance of surveyors reporting a decline in workload was minus 45 in the first quarter of 2009.
