Property improvement advice for homeowners

Home improvement projects such as replacing old sash windows with PVCu equivalents do not necessarily save mortgage holders money, it has been suggested.

According to the assistant editor of Homebuilding & Renovation magazine, Melanie Griffiths, conducting renovations like this can be something of a "false economy".

She added that it is always better to restore, rather than replace, sash windows for a number of reasons - and there are specialist firms that can do this.

People selling their homes may benefit from heeding Ms Griffiths' advice before marketing their property for sale.

"Not only do PVCu windows and doors compromise the look and therefore value of a period home, but also they are likely to need replacing long before timber windows and doors, as, once damaged, they cannot really be repaired," the expert explained.

Financial advice website Unbiased.co.uk recently published research that suggested 25 per cent of people in the UK were planning to undertake substantial home improvement projects this year.
