Warning issued over home improvement

Property News - Warning issued over home improvement

Those looking to conduct some property development or home improvement prior to selling a house should not undertake major renovations themselves.

At least that is the warning message from National Home Improvement Council (NHIC) director Andrew Leech, who said that the professionals should be called in to carry out big projects.

Roofing, electrical installations and plumbing are classed as jobs for the pros, the NHIC representative explained.

The average DIYer should not attempt these for safety and quality reasons, he said.

Indeed, there have been various warnings over the years about how poor home improvement can result in lower property prices.

"Painting and decorating is one example of improving your home for the average DIY person, but in so far as jobs such as new baths and new kitchens, it is as well to get the expert in to do that sort of thing," Mr Leech commented.

Last month, Saga reported that one in ten over-50s have carried out major home improvement projects and 31 per cent of them have received injuries as a result of DIY.
