Property News - Concern shown for landlords and tenants

Both landlords and tenants could "fall foul of rogue operators" if the government does not clamp down on unprofessional letting agents and property owners, it has been suggested.

According to Ian Potter, operations manager at the Association of Residential Lettings Agents (Arla), politicians need to show a commitment to ousting such people from the private rented sector.

"We estimate that around half of letting agents still do not belong to a professional body," he explained. "This poses a risk to new landlords as well as tenants."

The regulation of residential sales, lettings, and management agents should be combined in order to offer "a firm professional basis for this sector", the Arla representative added.

One government suggestion to monitor the industry more closely is a landlord register, but the National Association of Landlords said this week that there are contrasting views on such regulation among the different countries within the UK.
