Property News - Construction of affordable properties 'continues to rise'

The construction of affordable homes in the UK is continuing to increase, one industry spokesperson has stated.

Gavin Smart, research and futures assistant director at the National Housing Federation, said that housing associations were continuing to build more homes year-on year and this was the only sector appearing to do so.

"We hope with increased government investment in affordable housing that housing associations can do even more to deliver decent homes and help support the economy, including the construction sector," he commented.

The government announced in June of this year that £1.5 million would be set aside for the construction of 20,000 new affordable and energy-efficient homes over the next two years.

Recently, Persimmon homes also stated that house prices had "stabilised" across the mainland UK with the average property being sold at £155,524 in the first six months of this year.

During the first half of 2008, the average selling price stood at £181,485.
