Decisions to be made when buying property

When buying a house, consumers need to weigh up what they need with what they can afford.

At least that is the view of the head of communications at the Home Builders Federation, Steve Turner, who has claimed that builders must provide "a range of choice" so that affordable options exist for buyers.

His comments followed the publication of a report by the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment, which suggested that new-build properties are too small for modern living.

Of the 2,500 private new homeowners questioned, 57 per cent said they do not have enough storage.

Mr Turner remarked: "Unless you are going to deliver more land through the planning system - which currently isn't happening - you are going to be stuck with the problem that house builders are forced to build smaller houses."

He added that if this did not occur, no-one would be able to afford property.
