Property News - Landlords group to support new govt plans

National Landlords Association media relations manager Steve Hilton expects his organisation to be "fully supportive" of new government plans to protect tenants.

When landlords default on their mortgages, tenants can often find themselves negatively affected through no fault of their own and the recent proposals will give renters more support should they be introduced.

"It's not the tenant's fault [if properties are repossessed]; it's where the landlords have effectively defrauded and let their properties on bog-standard residential mortgages," Mr Hilton explained. "We don't think that [tenants] should have less rights."

The Communities and Local Government department plans, published in midweek, which aim to give the tenants of financially unstable landlords greater protection.

Part of the plans, which are up for consultation, include new laws allowing tenants to stay in a property for two months after the house is repossessed if the landlord has failed to tell his or her lender that they are letting out the home.
