NHIC: Now's a good time for property improvement

Now is an ideal time to carry out property development work such as fitting an extension, according to an industry expert.

Andrew Leech, director at the National Home Improvement Council (NHIC), a group that represents companies in the home improvement sector, said that building costs are lower than they have been, while builders are offering good prices for their services.

"It is a good time to start on something like [an extension]," he explained, before adding that there are some "very competitive quotes" about.

Mr Leech added that it is vital that anyone who opts to renovate their home notifies their building insurer because the work will raise the premium, as well as the responsibility on the insurance firm.

Earlier this week, Sainsbury's Home Insurance published research that showed how 3.27 million homeowners plan to make structural changes to their properties within the next year.

This figure was down by 39 per cent when compared to a similar survey conducted 12 months ago.
