National Landlords Association opposes charter

Property News - National Landlords Association opposes charter

The National Landlords Association (NLA) is one of a number of organisations that has voiced its opposition to a new government charter to clamp down on houses in multiple occupation (HMO).

Politicians hope to change the current HMO landscape by moving them away from residential areas following complaints about litter, noise and - in the case of homes rented by students - towns becoming empty during holiday periods.

Students, immigrants and poorer members of society will be affected by any developments.

The NLA is joined by the British Property Federation, the Residential Landlords Association and the National Union of Students in trying to resist any government policy to this end.

Richard Price, director of operations at the NLA, stated that planning is about buildings, but homes are about the people who live there.

"Changing HMO planning regulations in order to allow small groups of vociferous local residents to discriminate against certain parts of the community is not helpful," he explained.

Cities with high student populations such as Manchester, Liverpool and Sheffield may be affected by any government changes.
