Property completions in England 'up in Q2'

The number of housing completions in England during the second quarter of 2009 was up 24 per cent on the previous three-month period, new research has revealed.

An estimated figure of 39,320 was recorded by the UK Statistics Authority, according to a statement from the Communities and Local Government (CLG) department.

Meanwhile, there were an estimated 29,980 housing starts during that time, which was 63 per cent higher than the previous quarter but nine per cent fewer year-on-year. All figures are seasonally adjusted.

Revealing the wider housebuilding picture, the CLG said: "Annual housing completions in England totalled 136,140 in the 12 months to June 2009, down by 16 per cent compared with the 12 months to June 2008."

These figures come in the same week that the National Association of Estate Agents suggested that confidence has returned to the property market. It cited the reported increase in mortgage lending during July as evidence of its assessment.
