Property News - Students urged to 'look after rented property'

With the start of a new university year approaching, students who will be renting property have been given some advice to ensure the process runs smoothly.

The importance of budgeting was highlighted by Mydeposits.co.uk for new university starters as, typically, they will need the money to pay the first month's rent up front as well as their deposit before they take charge of the keys.

Students were also advised to read the contract carefully and ensure that they stick to their end of the agreement, for example, if there is a clause about maintaining the garden or not putting nails in the walls.

Eddie Hooker, chief executive, at the company added that although keeping a rented property clean and tidy may not be at the top of student tenants' priorities, "it's worth doing".

"Looking after the property means you are much more likely to get your deposit back at the end of your tenancy," he continued.

Figures from the Rental Index published by FindaProperty.com at the end of last month revealed that, on average, rental prices in July were at their highest level for four months - standing at £825 per month.
