Construction industry 'must rise to eco challenge'

The UK construction can become more competitive in the global market by adapting new skills and technology to rise to the challenge of developing low carbon property, according to the Federation of Master Builders' (FMB) director of external affairs.

Brian Berry said: "In terms of house-fitting, retro-fitting and capital projects, they will all have to be much attune to being low carbon."

He was commenting after business secretary Peter Mandelson announced at last week's Strategic Forum for Construction that a review of the construction industry was being commissioned to make sure it was "fit for purpose" for delivering a low carbon future.

The strengths of the UK construction industry will be assessed, while the potential opportunities for the country to become a world leader in this field will be debated.

Mr Berry said the FMB welcomed the review and agreed that the best opportunities for the sector as the UK pulls out of recession are presented by focusing on moving towards a low carbon economy.
