Healey announces help for mortgage holders

Housing minister John Healey has announced a new initiative that aims to help people in the UK who are struggling to pay their mortgages.

In his speech during the Labour Party conference in Brighton, the politician revealed the government was "tightening the rules" to offer help to people who are having difficulties meeting their home loan repayments.

"From this week, lenders will have to tell local councils, as they file for repossession action in the courts," he explained. "Councils can then offer advice, or help with our special rescue schemes."

Mr Healey, who became housing minister in June this year after a Cabinet reshuffle, suggested that if the Conservatives were in power things would be different and there would not be any help offered to people paying mortgages.

He also claimed the recession would be deeper if the opposition were running the country at present.
