Property News - Housing minister: We will do more to boost sector

The government is going to do more to help the property industry, according to housing minister John Healey.

During his speech at the Labour Party conference this week, he assessed the schemes currently underway which aim to aid the sector and announced a second round of funding for councils so they can build more affordable homes in the UK.

Mr Healey stated that prime minister Gordon Brown has backed him to deliver the right programmes for the country, highlighting the recent deal for an extra £1.5 billion in the government's Housing Pledge.

It has only been just under four months since the housing minister took up his post at the Communities and Local Government department. Prior to the appointment, he had been a local government minister with the department.

Detailing further plans for the sector, he said: "This year and next we're backing developers to kick-start housebuilding sites which have stalled in recession."

The government is also backing housing associations to construct more affordable homes, he added.
