Property News - Property owners issued home insurance advice

Property owners who take in a lodger have been advised to make sure they let their insurance company know about the arrangement.

Malcolm Tarling, spokesperson for the Association of British Insurers, said that insurance firms should always be told about anything that changes the risk involved in the cover deal.

"If you have got an existing policy and you take in a lodger you should also advise your insurance company because it may affect the policy," he explained.

A spokeswoman for Halifax Home Insurance also highlighted the dangers of property owners not disclosing such information to the companies that provide their cover.

Consumers can have certain claims declined if it emerges a lodger was staying in their home, she remarked.

Meanwhile, spokesperson for esure home insurance Asia Manzoor revealed that her firm does not provide cover for anyone who takes in a lodger because policyholders are effectively giving someone they do not know access and responsibility for the security of their house.
