Property owners 'motivated by cash, not environment'

If property owners can see what savings can be made by making their house more environmentally friendly, they will act.

That is the opinion of whatgreenhome.com founder Gordon Miller, who thinks that the majority of people are currently motivated by money rather than environmental issues.

People can save cash on their utility bills if they incorporate a number of green measures in their homes, he explained.

Mr Miller remarked: "There are incentives - such as up to £2,500 towards the installation of renewable technologies, such as solar thermal or photovoltaics - but the purchase cost and payback time dissuade most people from acting."

Earlier this week, in a speech at the Westminster Energy, Environment & Transport Forum, Federation of Master Builders director Richard Diment said that financial incentives are necessary if people are going to develop their homes in an environmentally-friendly fashion.

He argued that the existing housing stock in the UK needs to be improved to help reduce carbon emissions.
