Rics aims to improve property industry standards

The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (Rics) has teamed up with the Association of Residential Letting Agents and the National Association of Estate Agents have created the Property Standards Board.

A statement from Rics reveals that the group has been formed to set standards across residential property.

It will also be a focal point for better consumer information on the processes involved in buying, selling and renting property.

Furthermore, a code of practice for letting agents, estate agents and property managers will be drawn up.

Gillian Charlesworth, director of external affairs at Rics, said: "Home purchase and renting are far too important in people's lives to be left to a sector with no commonly applied and enforced standards and where anyone can set up shop."

She added that her organisation wants the industry to be able to do this for itself, while looking for the government and consumer bodies to help make it happen.

The emergence of the Property Standards Board comes as many industry commentators are suggesting that the UK is showing confidence in the housing market.
