Property News - Student tips for dealing with landlords

Students must make sure their deposits are protected when renting from landlords while at university, according to Malcolm Harrison, spokesman for the Tenancy Deposit Scheme.

This is apparently the "big warning" for university-goers who are moving into rental property with friends and course mates.

Mr Harrison said that one of the problems students have is that they are often careless.

"They do need to make certain that their deposit is protected. They need to actually ask the landlord for details of where the deposit is and the fact that it has been registered," he explained.

It is also important to consider that any bills accrued during a tenancy agreement are the joint responsibility of all the people who have signed that contract, the expert added.

Landlords should also be aware that they need to maintain gas appliances on an annual basis and ensure that their systems have been accredited by the Gas Safe Register, the organisation which replaced the Corgi gas scheme in April.
