Property News - HBF comments on Tory property development plans

Recent proposals by the Conservative Party to improve property development planning systems and promote local community development have been welcomed by the Home Builders Federation (HBF).

Steve Turner, head of communications at the organisation, said "there are a lot of benefits and positives in terms of what they are saying", although he claimed that some centralised control is required.

Commenting on how the plans - which would allegedly be part of Tory strategy if they were to gain power at the next general election - could be developed, Mr Turner suggested that there needs to be a "smooth transition" between today's policies and these new plans.

"In the longer term it is about putting controls [in place] to ensure that local authorities do deliver the houses that we know are needed," he added.

The British Property Federation, Land Securities, British Land, Grainger and Hermes all backed the Conservatives' plans in the recently-published Making Localism Deliver paper.

Under the terms of the proposals, local authorities would have greater power in the property development decision-making process in their respective regions.
