Housebuilding sector 'shows signs of improvement'

There are signs that the housebuilding sector is improving, according to the Union of Construction, Allied Trades and Technicians (Ucatt).

A spokesperson for the union said there had been a "small increase in private housebuilding".

He added that these were currently just "small and tentative steps".

The spokesperson remarked that although people in the industry are still losing their jobs, the levels are lower than this time last year.

A report from the Federation of Master Builders (FMB) revealed that last month's employment figures were an improvement and they were not as negative as the last five quarters.

The figure for the private housing sector was the least negative since the second quarter in 2008.

But the FMB also commented that conditions in the construction industry were still deteriorating.

Ucatt's spokesperson commented that the loss of jobs could be a "temporary blip in the recovery of the industry".

According to the Chartered Institute of Purhasing and Supply, this is the nineteenth consecutive month of decline.
