Mortgages for landlords 'must be made available'

Landlords with portfolios of all sizes must be given access to mortgages, according to the operations manager at the Association of Residential Letting Agents.

Ian Potter said that private rented sector "bears the burden" of a lack of new stock being put on the housing market, as demand for lettings increases.

His comments came after the Financial Services Authority (FSA) published a new paper dubbed Mortgage Lending, which proposes a number of changes to the way the mortgage market is regulated.

"The FSA appears to recognise the critical role that the buy-to-let market has to play in supporting the UK's housing needs in the years to come," Mr Potter explained, before adding that risk assessment needs "more stringent control".

Reflecting on the same paper, the Council of Mortgage Lenders stated that it is looking forward to working with the FSA as the whole mortgage system is refined.
