Property News - Halifax issues advice to property owners

Property owners in the UK have been issued some advice on how to protect their homes during periods of high winds and heavy rain.

According to figures from Halifax, an insurance claim for flood damage can top £20,000 and problems caused by storms can reach £1,000.

The financial services provider recommended securing any hazardous objects outside the property that could cause damage during strong winds. It also suggested making sure guttering and drain pipes are clear to cut the risk of any overflows.

If properties are susceptible to flooding, homeowners should move soft furnishings, carpets and curtains upstairs to avoid damage along with any sentimental items. Sandbags should be used outside windows and doors.

"We are advising homeowners who are at risk to take steps now to reduce the risk of damage to their homes and to monitor local news and weather regularly to keep updated on the conditions," said Martyn Foulds, senior claims manager at the company.

The Met Office has issued severe weather warnings for the UK this week. Heavy rain and strong winds are expected in the north-west of England and south-west Scotland in particular until Friday (November 20th).
