Property News - Landlords - cash payments pose 'a security risk'

Making rent payments by cash can pose a security risk to both landlords and tenants, according to the Residential Landlords Association (RLA).

Alan Ward, RLA chairman, says: "Landlords need cheques - they provide a secure and generally non-negotiable form of payment for quite large sums of money."

His comments come in response to last week's announcement from the Payments Council Board, which stated that cheques will be eradicated in the UK by October 31st 2018.

Mr Ward goes on to add that cash does not provide any proof of receipt for people who choose to pay by this means.

Brian Berry, director of external affairs at the Federation of Master Builders, concurs with Mr Ward, stating that many people, in particular the elderly, pay their bills by cheque and rely on this form of payment to keep a precise record of their transactions.

The Payments Council Board states that over the next nine years it will endeavour to seek out and promote alternatives to cheque payments.
